Nestled in the heart of Pemberton, one night accommodation is included in this workshop at our AirBnB (click link to see accommodation) The house is adjacent to the clay studio and provides a comfortable and inviting home base for your creative retreat.

This pottery workshop is designed for beginners eager to explore the world of ceramics. You will learn all the basics of working with clay, beginner wheel-throwing techniques and will be creating your own functional pieces.

After a day of creative exploration, unwind in the serene surroundings, have a hot tub or simply relax on the patio. The evening is perfect for connecting with fellow participants, sharing experiences, and perhaps enjoying a glass of wine. Your accommodation has a fully equipped kitchen to cook meals using local food from the nearby farms in Pemberton
Itinerary:
A Two-Day Introduction to Wheel Throwing in Pemberton
Day 1 — Introduction to Clay & Wheel Throwing
10:00 AM – 6:00 PM
10:00 AM – 1:00 PM | Introduction to Clay
Arrive, settle in and get acquainted with the studio, the clay and the pottery wheel.
We’ll begin with an introduction to the fundamentals of working with clay, including basic tools, clay preparation and studio practices. You’ll then dive into your first hands-on session at the wheel.
You’ll learn the essential steps of wheel throwing, including:
- Preparing clay
- Getting comfortable at the wheel
- Centering your clay
- Opening and pulling the walls
- Creating your first basic cylinder
There will be plenty of guidance and encouragement as you get a feel for the process.
1:00 – 2:00 PM | Lunch Break
Take a break for lunch and a chance to relax, refuel and chat about the morning.
2:00 – 6:00 PM | Studio time with Individual Instruction
The afternoon is dedicated to hands-on studio time.
Continue practicing your throwing skills and begin creating your own pieces. You’ll receive one-on-one instruction and guidance throughout the afternoon, allowing you to work at your own pieces and focus on developing confidence at the wheel.
Day 2 — Trimming & Decorating
9:00 AM – 2:00 PM
9:00 AM – 1:00 PM | Trimming, Finishing & Decorating
Return to the studio to work with the pieces you created on Day 1.
We’ll begin with an introduction to trimming — refining the shape and foot of your pots once the clay has reached the right stage of dryness. You’ll learn how effectively trim your pieces and give them a finished, intentional form.
We’ll then explore simple ways to decorate to personalize your work, including surface decorating techniques, carving and other introductory approaches.
1:00 – 2:00 PM | Finishing Up & Farewell
We’ll finish up in the studio, clean our workspaces and talk about what happens to your pieces once you leave.
After the workshop, your pieces will be bisque fired, glazed and shipped to you.
Please allow approximately 3–4 weeks after the workshop for the full firing, glazing and shipping process.
By the end of the weekend, you’ll have learned the fundamentals of wheel throwing, created your own handmade pieces, and gained the skills to keep exploring clay on your own.
